Blinds and Curtains for French and Sliding Doors

Doors bring their own set of constraints that a standard window doesn’t: you need to be able to walk through them, which rules out some products and makes others need a bit more thought.

Allusion blinds

A genuinely popular choice for French and sliding doors — the fabric vanes rotate for light and privacy control, or draw fully to one side for complete access, without any part of the blind hanging in the doorway when open. See our guide to Allusion blinds for how they work in more detail.

Vertical fitted per-panel roller blinds

For French doors with two independent leaves, fitting a roller blind to each door panel (rather than one wide blind across both) keeps each door fully operable independently, with the blind moving with the door rather than needing to be raised every time you open it.

Curtains on a bent or wide track

Curtains work well for French and sliding doors too, provided there’s enough wall space either side for the curtains to stack fully clear of the doorway when open. This is worth checking carefully at the measure stage — a curtain that doesn’t stack completely clear will partially block the opening every time.

What to avoid

• Roman blinds directly over a door you use daily: they need to be fully raised for access every time, which becomes impractical on a frequently used door.
• Heavy curtains without enough stack space: if the wall space either side is limited, curtains will obstruct part of the doorway even when fully open.

Bifold doors

Multi-panel bifold doors are best treated like a wide window rather than a single door — Allusion blinds or a continuous roller blind system that tracks the full width tend to work better than trying to dress each individual bifold panel separately.

Our recommendation

For a door you use every day, Allusion blinds or a per-panel roller blind give the best balance of light control and unobstructed access. For a more decorative finish where the door is used less frequently, curtains on a track with generous stack space either side can look wonderful — just confirm the stack space works during your measure.
