Motorised Blinds & Curtains: Worth the Smart Upgrade?

Motorisation used to be a luxury reserved for very high-end homes. It’s now a genuinely practical option for most made-to-measure blinds and curtain tracks, and one of the questions we get asked most often at consultations. Here’s what it actually adds.

More than just convenience

Pressing a button (or asking a voice assistant) is the obvious appeal, but the real practical benefits run deeper:

• Hard-to-reach windows: skylights, high or awkward windows above stairs, and large bay windows with heavy curtains all become effortless to operate.
• Scheduling: set blinds to open at sunrise and close at sunset, or open blackout blinds automatically before an alarm goes off — useful for both routine and helping regulate sleep.
• Security while away: scheduling blinds and curtains to open and close while you’re on holiday is a simple, effective way to make a home look lived-in.
• Child safety: motorised systems remove trailing cords and chains entirely, which is worth considering for any household with young children.

Most motorised blinds and curtain systems we fit integrate with common smart home ecosystems, so you can control them via an app, group them into scenes with your lighting, or trigger them by voice. What does it add to the cost?

Motorisation adds cost per window — for the motor itself, the control system, and in some cases mains wiring if you’re not using a battery or rechargeable system. Battery and rechargeable motors avoid the need for an electrician entirely and have become the more popular option for retrofits, since there’s no wiring work involved. It’s worth budgeting motorisation as an optional upgrade per window at quote stage, rather than assuming it applies to a whole order — many customers motorise just the hard-to-reach or most-used windows and leave the rest manual.

Is it reliable?

The systems we fit today are a long way from early, unreliable motorised blinds. Battery life on rechargeable systems typically lasts months between charges depending on use, and manual override is usually still possible if a motor ever needs attention. As with any mechanical product, we’d always recommend fitting motorisation only from an established manufacturer with a proper warranty and aftercare — which is exactly what we specify.

Motorisation is well worth considering for skylights, large or heavy curtains, and any window a child or older family member struggles to reach — the practical benefit there is real, not just novelty.
